City and LGSETA sign skills partnership to expand training and opportunity

The City of Cape Town today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA), establishing a multi-year strategic partnership to expand skills development across the metro and the broader municipal sector.
The agreement, anchored in skills development for Local Economic Growth funding, spans all 13 City directorates and 35 education, training and development programme types. It also positions the City's Training Academy as an inter-municipal development hub, a facility that will build skills capacity not only for Cape Town, but for municipalities across the region.
'This partnership is about opportunity,' said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys. ‘It reflects the City's deep commitment to developing our people, with a deliberate focus on those who need it most: persons with disabilities, EPWP and community workers, adult learners, and entrepreneurs in our township economy.'
Key programme streams under the partnership include:
Learnerships for persons with disabilities, including call centre and revenue collection qualifications with specialised assistive equipment
Skills development for the EPWP worker base, linking public employment programmes to accredited occupational qualifications
Adult Education and Training, offering literacy, numeracy, and functional skills from NQF Level 1 to 4
Local economic development training, supporting informal-sector and township-economy entrepreneurs
Arts and culture development, creating pathways from community artist to accredited practitioner
The partnership provides for joint planning, co-funding of established accredited programmes, and full grant funding for new pilot initiatives, over a period of up to three years.
